seeing as Outpost Homeworld's forum is down, I can't really demand everyone goes there to talk about the Evil Renegade so this is an official unofficial thread on it. However, please still do not reveal spoilers for episodes yet to air in the UK and try to be subtle with stuff that has aired in case of overseas spoilerphobics.

I sort of agree with Loz on one detail. CE's outfit looks like something I would wear. Despite being an outsider, and a chaos-creating one at that, he simply looks too bloody normal.

I'm not so sure -- I think the clothes work precisely because they're sufficiently normal so as not to distract from how off-the-wall the performance is (judging by Rose, at times more so than Tom Baker at his most self-indulgent) -- if both performance and clothing were completely eccentric it'd be too much. And to be honest they don't look all that normal to me -- the jacket doesn't fit him properly (but maybe it fits Fitz?), and the whole ensemble is clearly the choice of someone who just wants to throw something on for the sake of not being naked.
As to the whole issue-that-dare-not-speak-its-name, it looks increasingly clear to me that all concerned knew that CE wouldn't be carrying on past this series from, if not the beginning, at least very early on in the process, and the inevitable consequence of that was intended to be the Killer Surprise Twist at the end of episode 13. But then some combination of the tabloids' uncontrollable scoop-lust and Eccleston's honesty went and blew it. I was a bit upset about it for a couple of days*, but I got over it again. I'm popping off to visit my girlfriend this w/e, and the simple act of putting setting the video for ER on my to do list somehow filled me with a deep sense of joy that it really is really back, that for the second week in a row I can tape it. Of course, coming here to talk about it is confusing me greatly, 'cos one of the other items on my list is "take ER tape" (gf gets lousy C4 reception, so I tape the-show-actually-called-ER for her). * Incidentally, my sister, who hasn't paid any attention to the ER since we were both little and liked to pretend that our parents' yellow car was the 3rd ER's Earth-based transport device, seemed more bothered about it than I was. She went off on one to me on the phone the other day about how they were using up regenerations too quickly, and if they did end up finding a way to circumvent the Rule of Thirteen at some point in the future it'd be a betrayal of the series! Clearly, a lot of the mythos is more deeply embedded in the national consciousness than the production team seem to believe. |

*gulp*
Uhm, I've just read that, and I'm not entirely sure what to think. Mostly because when I watched 1.1 almost a month ago now, the first thing that came into my mind, after I'd seen it, was "I really hope Lawrence writes a review of that, it'll be more hilarious than his review of 'The Ancestor Cell'". I expected a cutting, scientifically precise rubbishing of all of it's numerous flaws, topped off with the cherry of his beautiful vitriol. But he was complimentary! He was nice, he was even proud, which, seriously beggars belief. I know I'm in a minority when it comes to the people who see Rose as an appalling way to spend 45 minutes of one's life, but I'm really quite saddenned that the one person I expected in this world to agree, does not. |

I was pretty annoyed about Eccleston too, but watching tonight's episode really took my mind off that issue strangely. Like Lawrence I'm fearful about Tennant, but we'll have to wait and see what happens. I was tempted to forget about the DVDs for the new series, but why do that when I'm enjoying it as much as I am?
I agree with Lawrence's broader point about the banality of culture, and I hope the show doesn't get too stuck on Earth. What's the point of having a door to anywhere, when you always use it to go to Earth? Watching this series is a bit like reading Grant Morrison's New X-Men. The elements are all there, but used or presented in different ways. Voudoun |

Based solely on the one photo I've seen of him, I'd say that Tennant is too... well... pixieish to be the Doctor.
OTOH, I could easily see Bill Nighy in the role. Or Bruce Spence (because he needs even MORE genre roles under his belt. :) ) Best/Mario

Quote: It didn't, Channel 4 did. Ah, the bewildering world of British broadcasting! The terrestrial "free to air" national channels: BBC1 - launched 1932/36 (just as 'BBC', obviously) ITV - launched 1955 (first commercial channel) BBC2 - launched 1964 (channel to cater for more obscure interests after BBC1 and ITV began the ratings war which continues to this very day) Channel 4 - launched 1982 (commerical version of ITV) five - launched 1997 (third commercial channel, not available in all areas) The BBC also broadcast BBC3* and BBC4 on digital (via cable, satellite or the freeview service). Channel 4 are noted (these days) for such exciting programmes as "When Interior Decorators Attack!" or "When Plastic Surgery Goes Wrong!". BBC4 broadcasts things like live Quatermass, live Shakespeare and The Prisoner. *yes, I did briefly hope they would start by broadcasting a live archaeological dig from Devil's End.... Mags

I know Outpost Homeworld's back up now, but this seems the appropriate place to mention this one particular thought I had about Saturday's episode:
Mild "End of the World" Spoilers Was anyone else disappointed that when the Adherents of the Repeated Meme were described by you know who as "just concepts", they turned out to be droids rather than actual conceptual entities? (Oh, and, erm, Mags, I assume you mean "commercial version of BBC2" re: Channel 4 there.) |

Quote: On a similar note, my mother is really unconvinced about the new series, going on about how it's not the same, and she's not sure about Eccles, etc... As for Loz's review, I broadly agree. I think perhaps he's drawing quite a lot of big patterns out of a single episode, and may be proved wrong - although he does seem to be right that we are 'being asked to giggle at the aliens', having now seen End of the World. He's put a very pithy finger on the new series being about looking around, not outside, though. I wonder what he means about this being possibly for the best at the moment? Personally, I took it to mean that actually, something that even acknowledged the idea of an outside would be playing into the hands of the mentality that is doing the most damage at the moment. To be honest, I disagree completely with the comments above that expected Loz to be scathing. I sat thinking, particularly at the end, that it was as close to the thinking expressed in Loz's interviews as anything I could imagine RTD writing. At the end, Rose LITERALLY has a choice between heroically battling her way through a normal life in the manner of far too many characters on TV, or rejecting her boyfriend and life and actually going and seeing things that are important and bigger than her own life. The Doctor's frustration at humanity for being too wrapped up in simply eating, working and sleeping are a simplified version of Loz's concerns in his interviews (it seems to me, anyway). Doesn't Loz ever review things in a "normal" way, though - eg. Murray Gold's music is intrusive, blah blah.... |

Continuity wise the new series (so far) seems to fit perfectly with a post War in Heaven setting. I found that interesting - Maybe "The Ancestor Cell" never happened....?

What do you mean, 'maybe'?
What's really going to irritate me is if the series goes and gives its own backstory to the destruction of the Homeworld (which seems likely), thus giving the planet not one but two deaths in a short space of time for those of us who do want to try to wedge these things into the same universe. |
