Found this one to be mostly disappointing. Some of the exposition scenes seem to go on forever. So if the next one is the last, I don't think I'd be
too disappointed.

They're referred to as the natives of Mars, but they're obviously not Ice Warriors.... hmmmm....Ok, it implies that they're relatively humanoid (they "don't have enough legs" to be insects), and since we haven't seen Ice Warriors without their armour, it's not entirely inconceivable that they could look insectoid when undressed. The insects are supposed to be effectively extinct, but the survivors from the newly hatched swarms could reestablish their civilization in time for Peladon etc. Alternatively the Ice Warriors could have been the ones who moved in when the Osirians left, though that implies they're not native to Mars, and if they're present in this time period they're clearly staying well away from the pyramid. |

In Big Finish's 'The Judgement of Isskar', the pre-Ice Warriors become Ice Warriors when the events of that play cause the atmosphere to become unbreathable. Clearly, the 'Natives' in Ozymandias have died out by the time the Ice Warrior civilization is in full swing, as it is only during this later civilization that the atmosphere becomes unbreathable. Or, I'm just being a huge continuety nut, but that's partially what started the FP saga in the first place isn't it?
And, as a side note, someone over at OG stated that they thought the native martians sounded a bit like the martians from Quartermass and the Pit... any thoughts?

I really liked this one! Much more so than the last two on my first listen. I was pleased by the return of Finton and Corwyn, they make a good contrast and change from all the gods and super-powerful beings.
I have a vague memory that the New Adventures might somewhere have said that the Ice Warriors originally came from elsewhere. Alternatively this could be a long way into the past or the future - there's no reason the space-time tunnel has to lead contemporaneously.
The Dying Days established that Mars has a breathable atmosphere for a human, so that's likely where Miles was getting it from. I also think it describes what an Ice Warrior looks like and it's not an insect. I'd never heard of the Big Finish audio you mention which comes up with an explanation for the breathable-ness - was one really necessary? I suspect LM probably doesn't listen to the Big Finish audios, or wouldn't really care if he did. Alternatively maybe it's some kind or breathable air field projected some miles around the pyramid or other Osirians structures or something? (would there really be air naturally in the Delta either say or all the way through the chamber with the sun in?)
Personally I think the insect creatures are likely the Charrl, or possibly the Wirrn, but am not really that bothered. Interestingly and pleasingly the interview
mentions that the Factions audios didn't sell that well at first but now sell 'very well', though sadly it looks like the next one will be the
final Faction audio. All good things come to an end and maybe we will get more in future from Random Static, if they are actually going to release more books
at some point still?
So the Homeworld is actually destroyed then? Taken down by the Faction afterall, when The War King turned soft and left a way through and Justine had a genocidal moment. Lolita is apparently wounded - I can't really see the Mala'akh being able to hurt her in any way, but she mentions something she ate disagreed with her - I'm assuming the consumed Faction Empire was the cause, and that was Godfather Morlock's plan, though I don't know whether it was something Justine triggered or something they did from inside - if they're still sort of alive in there.
Speculation... what will happen next in the last Faction audio? Will Justine and Eliza survive this or one or other die off? Final possibility that's occurred to me - could Eliza/Horus be the Enemy? |

I thought the "something she ate" was just a joke, though it's possible the War King had defences that proved less digesteable than she'd
anticipated. The Empire was too long ago and part of a different series, so I doubt that's it. I have trouble accepting the Mal'akh as being that
deadly, too; they'd cause problems for the academician types, sure, but the House Military should have been able to make short work of them.
Yes, the Charrl are a definite possibility. |

The whole episode made me feel like I'd missed a story somewhere. All of the familair characters (especially Lolita) appear in forms that are
unrecognizable. When did she go from Big Bad to zany aunt?

mdg1 wrote: That could be part of the reason for bringing back Finton and Corwyn. But Lolita didn't seem all that different to me... obviously her situation has changed since the Mal'akh invasion, but her personality is the same. Corwyn is no threat to her, and she likes the sound of her own voice, so why not talk to him? Her present for Geb at the start wasn't exactly a pair of socks, and it looks like she turns out to be the Sphinx from Corwyn's dream at the very end. |

Indeed, "shame" then being Justine's reaction as she turns up to late to save him or happens to notice what's happened maybe?

Quite enjoyed it myself, and got that slightly sad fannish satisfaction from watching it all slowly line up with the correct state of play to lead into
Pyramids of Mars, as well as obviously setting up for an interesting denouement in itself.
Given the possibility that time passes at different rates at each end of the time tunnel in the sarcophagus, could the "natives" on Mars evolve into Ice Warriors? But then, what was all the business about the ones that were a certain colour obeying Lolita?... |
