mother/father Posts: 280 30 June, 2008 12:44 AM	Tags : None Mad Larry asks: Not only am I still mystified as to the nature of her personality, I don't even know who's supposed to like her. With one exception, none of the Doctor Who fans with whom I regularly chew the Adipose-fat can stand her; my family doesn't seem to want anything to do with her; the kindest things I've heard said about her have been along the lines of 'well, she was all right in "The Runaway Bride", but a whole year…?'; and my extended peer-group finds her ridiculous, which is telling, when you consider how many professional comedians I know. As I've said before, we could have had anybody as This Year's Girl. We could have had Elaine Cassidy, the most companiony actress in the history of time. We could have had Carey Mulligan out of "Blink", at a pinch. Instead, they gave us the female Harry Enfield, with whom almost nobody can empathise. I can't even find it in myself to hate her, I just find it bewildering that someone whose only skills are mugging to the camera and doing silly voices should be somehow mistaken for an actress. Well, I think Donna Noble is the best post-2005 companion - much better than pathetically-devoted-much-like-a-Labrador Rose and almost-as-soppy-Martha. She just edges out Cap'n Jack because - as Larry says - Venialdegree kind of ruined the bad-ass, cocky man-whore we knew and loved from "The Empty Child". WHO'S WITH ME?!? P.s. If Larry's right and they are going to turn Donna into the Eleventh Evil Renegade or some such, does that mean he will stop watching the programme altogether and turn his writing skills to something more worthy? PLEASE?!? She's got a gob on her when she needs it and she's also got a soft emotional core too, she feels things and we can see and feels how much they affect her. She's more than willing to stand up for herself (except against her mother's rather caustic tongue) and she's willing to fight for others too. She's not some lapdog to a time lord prince or a gung ho warrior from the future, she's an ordinary person, the most special people in the universe according to the Doctor in Father's Day... Martha was okay, Cat Pain Jack was a little irritating I thought, Rose should've been loaded into a cannon and fired at the sun, but the Tatester is indeed also my choice for best thing on show since 2005. And sure she's an unusual choice of companion - she's been written with a personality beyond the odd scream interspersed with 'what the fuck is that over there, Doctor?' Furthermore, prior to ER, Catherine Tate brought us a decent BBC comedy show (which is a rare thing indeed), whereas Billie Piper brought us the Because We Want To Because We Want To song and was sexually active with (ugh! sorry to remind you of this) Chris Evans. On one hand, you've got his whole routine about: "Evil Renegade is the single determining factor as to whether our children become visionaries or sociopaths. But I'm not a geek! I hate geeks! HATE HATE HATE THEM!" On the other hand, you've got his frankly speculation-provoking going on about the "shagability" of the various women on the show. Like that whole blog post last year saying who he'd screw in every episode. And the thing that made me wince about his "Stolen Earth" post the most is either his nasty comment about Catherine Tate's tits, or his virtual admission that Freema Agyeman makes great one-handed watching. I find that amazing coming from the person who wrote Dead Romance, although quite frankly perhaps he thought he gave away too much in that and has been trying to protest his manliness ever since. Who is he trying to convince, and why? Gee, I'm so glad he doesn't read this board. Seriously - my partner is exactly one of the squeeing, fanfic-writing, Evil-Renegade-wrestling-John-Hart-topless girl-fans who Larry seems to hold in the most contempt, and indeed to virtually blame for everything he doesn't like about the post-2005 show and modern sci-fi television in general. Cousin Rani says Donna's a "woman's woman", and indeed perhaps that's the problem. Maybe there are just too many girls in in the playground these days for Larry's personal comfort, and again that's amazing from the person who created Christine Summerfield. Yeah, it is all very weird given the fairly enlightened attitudes on display in most of his fiction. (The Catherine Tate's breasts thing particularly boggles me as in things like the shaggability post -- which is still up, there unlike almost everything else, so he clearly doesn't see it as in any way embarrassing and is probably particularly proud of it -- he seems to be keen on larger-than-average women.) And then there's his horrendous attitude towards "chavs" and the '70s-style sort-of-racism of using words like "dusky" only semi-ironically. (I said a while back on Outpost Homeworld that it really ticks me off when all of this gets ignored, but a few off-colour comments about the white middle class men who write Doctor Who are fodder for pages and pages of wank in the Fandom Wank sense.) I don't know which way to take it, to be honest: is it that when he sits down to write something "proper" his better angels wrestle this stuff down, or is the Larry we see in the blog posts etc. a constructed persona that's more sexist etc. than he really is? I'm guessing one from column A and one from column B, plus don't forget that naked text on a screen rarely conveys the subtleties of speech or thought. It's surprising how much we say that operates on more than face value, which is probably why in some instances he should maybe take a bit more care before setting words to screen. That's my wishful thinking / apologist two cents. Maybe I'm getting old but it's a long time I watched anything on the box with one subset of thoughts cycling hrough who I'd shag, honestly. It was probably the Huq woman from Blue Peter, and having found out that (allegedly, friends of friends) she has a real bad attitude and terrible BO I've gone off her a bit. Anyway, I'm kind of happy enough in that department. Hmmm. Was it Loz who did that 'Countdown to Charlotte Church being legal' thing? The introduction to the reprinted Dead Romance suggests that he wasn't even entirely sure he was male until quite recently, which would answer the question of "who is he trying to convince". little sister/brother Posts: 48 2 July, 2008 9:21 PM	I think the nicest thing I can say about Catherine Tate as Donna is that, "it's no where near as bad a I expected it to be" - Damning with faint praise, but there you go. Side-stepping Larry's nauseating sexism toward her (and in general) for a moment, I do seem to have been getting similar reactions from Not-We as Larry has. Anyone I know who is aware of my ER fetish has, at one time or another during series four, come up to me to level complaints, in general and about Ms Tate in particular - Like I'm "connected" and "can do something about" it or summit! She's had her moments, but I'll be glad when she's gone to be honest.

Another issue is those of us (esp. the non-Brits) who never heard of Catherine Tate before she got into Evil Renegade. I suppose if you were aware of her prior comedy work (much of which, I'm told, is extremely annoying), you would come in with a prejudice which would be difficult to shift. I don't think they have been disproportionately male, to be honest. You may have something with to the whole Brits/Non Brits thing, though. Personally, I've tried to keep any prejudices I may have had to one side and judge her on her performances in ER, which at times have been pretty good - at other times, have been... errmm... not so good (I'm trying not to ruin the "love" theme of this thread. Did you notice ) It's weird, because when I ever see Tate interviewed, I like the way she comes across - Dry, a bit shy, nice . She needs to stop, I dunno, "acting" so much when she's acting.

mother/father Posts: 439 3 July, 2008 3:54 PM	I personally think Catherine Tate's sketch show has been one of the few comedy things worth watching in recent years (along with Mitchell and Webb) and she's also highly rated amongst my work colleagues, none of whom are media types, some of whom are the dreaded 'chavs' to which Larry occasionally and scathingly refers. I dunno, maybe I'm biased with regards to her acting, that is I'm automatically well-disposed towards her due to a prejudice of her not being an arsehole. Have problem with ER companions some time - dislike the middle-class media image/idea of what constitutes working class. It's so often uber-chavs rolling around in trackies quothing 'wicked, Doctor, innit though - fish and chips? laaaaaahhhhvley!' I am ostensibly working class (so far as one is able to comprehend) and yet I understand quantum theory. Harumph. http://www.theotherconquest.com/
