at the end of Ship, Jussy was off to Homeworld as the Osiran rep, wonder if she'll meet Lolly there and we'll have a huge catfight? Maybe she can set
Lolly up against Sutekh the Cuddly?

starring GABRIEL WOOLF, WANDA OPALINSKA, JANE LESLEY, JET TATTERSALL, PETER HALLIDAY, CHRIS TRANCHELL While Philip Madoc is an excellent choice for the role, there seems to be a little confusion there between the War King and the War Lord. Oh well. |

Cover blurb now up:
Facing a divided Council and fighting a nine-hundred-and-twenty-front war across time and space, the War King sends Ambassador Mortega from the
Homeworld to the Osirian Court, to combat the new power that has risen in their midst that challenges the might of the Great Houses.
Meanwhile, by gathering the complete biodata of Osiris, Justine plans to resurrect the only Osirian capable of standing against Sutekh the
Destroyer. But the forces at work on the Homeworld may soon intervene fatally in Justine's plans...
Looking forward to this!

Well, my contributor's copy came through today, and it's fantastic. The cast sound great and there's some great sound design.

Mine came yesterday, along with Storm Mine.
Maybe I'm just getting jaded, but I didn't enjoy it all that much - like Taren Capel and Checkmate, it just seems to be politics-for-politics'-sake, lacking in humour for the most part, and less than wholly transparent. Storm Mine, on the other hand, I found utterly incomprehensible but extremely compelling. I should listen to it again without doing other stuff at the same time, perhaps. |

I enjoyed it -- the War King was particularly good, as was Lord Mortega. The recast [SPOILER] Lolita sounded so like
the original I had to wonder why Magic Bullet didn't just get Caroline Burns-Cook back. I'm getting used to
the new Justine and Eliza, although I still prefer the old pair. Clever choice to make Nephthys a sympathetic mouse intimidated by her brother, rather than an
evil bitchqueen -- it certainly prompts a new reading of The Sands of Time.
What I want to know is, is [SPOILER] the resurrected pseudo-Osiris going to be Horus? My only complaint is that nothing very much happens, in plot terms -- the new, altered status quo at the end is only a very slight progression on that seen at the end of Ship of a Billion Years, with only [SPOILER] Eliza's situation having actually changed. Also the Delta seemed a bit generic, not as well thought through as Lawrence's high-concept stuff generally is. It's also becoming apparent that there are certain recurring character types in all of Lawrence's audio work, the most obvious being the Morlock / Upuat / War King "world-wearily sardonic older man" archetype. (Young Sabbath fulfils this function in Sabbath Dei / In The Year of the Cat, which is a slight variant.) Still a lovely, textured and complex aural experience, though. And not entirely humourless -- my favourite line was the one about country dancing. |

Just finished my first listen. Seems pretty good, though it's such a while since I listened to the first two magic bullets that I think I might go back
over them. I think the series is going in a good direction, I just hope the wait for the next one isn't as long as it was for this one...

they're honest words, literally nothing of any value happens, Sutekh gets madder, Lilith gets predictable, Justine's
in some sort of Monty Python skit and Eliza's stiking pins in cows. the plot is they start making a clone of osiris and Lilith interferes,
that's five minutes worth of story in a 60 minute+ audio, which is the equivilent of the Boba Fett cartoon in the Star Wars Holiday Special...
The War King and I has to be the title of the next audio |

I view it as a character introduction episode. For folks that haven't read the books. They introduce both The War and The War King - both of which
haven't been mentioned in the radioplays up to now.
However, that being said - I am presuming the Assyrian Court trust the Great Houses enough to let them know where the planet outside of time is that they are docking is, so they can send their ambassador - however, how does the Isis gate and walk to the hidden laboratory/temple on top of a mountain fit into this? Is the temple difficult to reach or not? Is it hidden or not? Presumably either the Ambassador relayed all the location details to the War King and his fleet, or the War King tracked Lolilta there. Evidently the journeyings of Lolita are trouble free and not worth narrating - it's more important that we stay with Eliza's long setup puns and Justine's meanderings for some reason. Also I gather that Great House forensics and politics are fairly shoddy - not only is there no ramifications whatsoever for Lolita's destruction of the Eleven Day Empire, they apparently don't care that she killed other Great House members, or employed Sontarans. She has a licence to do what the hell she wants and the only people who know about it don't want to interfere. |

There were certainly ramifications for the destruction of the Empire - that's _why_ Lolita is in such a strong position now. The Houses (or at least a
sizeable proportion thereof) were delighted to have a nuisance like the Faction eliminated, and the unfortunate loss of one member of Tracolix was a small
price to pay. If they'd known Lolita deliberately killed him, they'd probably have been a bit more put out. Use of alien mercenaries as cannonfodder is
standard procedure for the Houses during Wartime.
My guess is the laboratory in the Delta is not hard to find if you're looking for it, but not at all obvious if you don't know it's there. |

Personally, I'm rather fond of alien politics, so I enjoyed this one quite a bit.
Would rather explain why I like the Houseworld audios, with the tin dog, the blonde president, the savage, and Cardinal Braxiatel. I'm still whinging over the recast of Justine (Eliza doesn't make a difference to me), so I didn't even notice that wasn't Caroline Burns-Cook playing Lolita. And as for ramifications, I agree the Houseworld probably couldn't care less that the Empire's gone, and I'd go so far as to say that Tracolix fellow was probably bumped off for a good reason. Displeased a high-muckity-muck of one of Great Houses. |

Wasn't a story mentioned in one of the books that Lord Ruthven died when an anarchitect trapped him in his timeship? A little misinformation, perhaps?
(Update: It's part of Homunculette's story in Alien Bodies...)
